In the 1940's the population was 132,222,000 with 8,120,000 unemployed. The nation was in debt with 43 billion dollars and heading towards a depression. America went into debt to finance resources and supplies for World War II. America spent loads of money on guns, tanks, missiles, and weapons. The nation slowly fell into debt as the war kept going. Luckily with war production the nation was slowly able to come out of debt. With war the nation was able to come over unemployment almost completely by drafting and senting out men for the war. Most of the men that were sent off to the war worked in the labor force. The unemployed people including women took over the labor force. Women took over the jobs of the men and full authority. By sending off men to the war the government reclassified about 55% of the jobs in America. There were longer workweeks and higher earnings for all.The average salary for an average person was $1,229 per year. The economy grew threw consumer goods and military hardware. The U.S. sold military resources such as guns, planes, war gear, and knives. Selling military hardware increase employment because people were given jobs to manufacture war items. The government became very rich off of the industry of war supplies was able to get the money back last from the Great Depression.
